Riscster Survives Death Blow

Posted by Alasdair Bailey on 09:38, 28/7/2000 | ,
Riscster, the RISC OS version of Napster has been modified allowing it to connect to OpenNap servers. The OpenNap servers are operated in a similar fashion to IRC servers; there are many of them around the world all running the open source version of the Napster file sharing system. In common with Napster, the servers do not transfer files themselves; they simply act as central points for user registration and file listings.

This news will cause a headache for the RIAA who only yesterday announced a court ruling in the US forcing Napster to shut down its servers. It remains to be seen whether the RIAA will switch their efforts to enforcing the outline ruling on OpenNap servers. In the meantime, beta 1.10 of Riscster with OpenNap support may be downloaded from Rob Dimond's site at http://www.riscster.cwc.net/.

Unregistered user The Napster servers are currently still online, so for the moment I reccomend the use of 1.01 until I release a non-beta version of 1.10. Cheers, Rob
